Had a fabulous stay here from 1st to 8th February organised through Crystal Ski. Yes, the hotel decor is a little dated but this is more than made up for by the excellent staff, sumptuous food and fantastic location Only word of warning (and this is not under the control of the hotel), if you order rental equipment through Skiset/Caribou, they are only open in the early morning and evening. Should you arrive at lunchtime, and want to ski the afternoon, you'll have to get the equipment from the shop in the town

We enjoyed our stay at Le Viking, we went with open eyes and plenty of scepticism given that we knew the recent history and what type of hotel it is and we were pleasantly surprised by many aspects, but I think it’s good to be honest. On the plus side: We were on a Crystal holiday and Alex, the rep, was brilliant, from the beginning, when they tracked down lost luggage, right to the end where they organised a piste basher down to our bus. It’s on the mountain so genuinely ski in, ski out. The staff are lovely and keen to do well. The food was plentiful and reasonably good to very good for 3 star half board, and get to the dining room early and bag a table with a great view. The rooms are clean and comfortable if pretty cramped and a little tired, but hey, you’re on the mountain! On the could-be-better side: The hotel could do with modernising, the odd new panel, etc, and a lick of paint throughout. The staff are universally young, so a bit blind to the odd grubby carpet, pile of used towels, uncleared bar tables, etc, which remain so until asked, then happily sorted. You just wish you didn’t have to ask. Public spaces are a bit limited but ok. The swimming pool, should be a real selling point, just could have been heated better, although used, you had to be pretty hardcore to stay in more than a couple of minutes, or aged 10 and blue. It would have been so much fun to spend more time in it. Finally, the spa is only a small sauna, and you quick to book it, likewise the raclette dinner - they only have a handful of the ‘machines’. All in all, these are all small things, and I only raise them because Le Viking would be fantastic (it already is in so many ways) and somewhere we’d happily come to again - I wouldn’t want to dissuade anyone from going there.

Hotel Le Viking is located in a unique and stunning location, up in the mountains just above the Pleney Gondola. Panoramic views over snow covered mountains and down into the valley. Changing weather and changing lights created an everchanging scene. I had read previous reviews so was ready for the snowy walk up the small slope to the hotel from the Pleney. A Skidoo collected our luggage which made it easy. Our departure was before the Pleney opened so a trip in a piste basher was arranged for us and others, which was an incredible bonus! Staff were incredibly friendly and attentive all week. Nothing was too much for them and they were cheery and fun. A couple of minor issues with the room were sorted efficiently by a friendly handyman. The room was quite basic but that's to be expected in a ski hotel. We spent much of our time in the bar area which was a great feature of the hotel. Log fire, friendly bar staff, board games for families plus a pool table, a variety of comfy seating and stunning panoramic views. My partner enjoyed swimming in the pool. It was pretty chilly but he found that invigorating after a day skiing and reckoned it was good for his muscles! The food was amazing all week. I particularly enjoyed making my own freshly squeezed orange/grapefruit juice every morning and the freshly baked pastries. But there were all sorts of other options too. Something for everyone. The evening meals were such a treat with as much wine as wanted. Beautifully presented, a massive variety and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We were there for Valentine's Day and were treated to a wonderful experience with a red rose, polaroid photo, decorated tables and the most amazing pink meringue hearts for dessert! I didn't ski everyday, for a variety of reasons, and being positioned as it was, I could enjoy sitting in the bar infront of a log fire while the rest of my family could easily pop in at intervals through the day. Sitting on the terrace in the sunshine at the end of the skiing day was wonderful, with a variety of treats provided between 4-5pm including cheese fondu, crepes, vin chaud, hot chocolate, madelaines. The staff spoke very good English, which was helpful, but I also appreciated practising my French! The skiing was wonderful with a great variety of runs and being able to ski in and ski out from the hotel was a real bonus. Ski hire directly from the hotel (caribou) made things easy. The boot room was very hot overnight and our boots were always dry by the following morning. Worth sticking your name on hired skis as someone accidentally took mine by mistake (same make and colour but different length). Fortunately, technology confirmed it wasn't my fault and I was allowed another pair of skis. All in all, we had a great holiday and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Le Viking.

Reading previous reviews it was fair to say I was wary. On arrival the staff were friendly and welcoming and went out of their way to assist. The rooms are basic but functional. The food was a bit mixed through the week but we could find something we liked every night. I would do the staff a disservice if I didn’t mention Christmas Eve. The food and party atmosphere was very impressive and a good time was had by all. The staff were very entertaining and made such an effort. The added benefit of ski in ski out makes it a great choice in Morzine.
