Liked · Excellent choice if you expect to do any excursions by train as only about 250 meters (0.1 miles) from the train station, and yet a flat 600m walk to the Palais des Papes. Older style hotel but well decorated. Beds were reasonably comfortable and the rooms clean but smallish with a single desk-like chair. Had 2 separate small elevators. Very nice hot/cold breakfast - not much variety day to day but a wide choice of items so well worth the extra charge. Staff very nice and helpful even with my lack of french. Hotel on the main street just inside the walls, with much better restaurants than further into the center. Would reserve again. Disliked · There were some mobility concerns: 1. Although there are elevators there were a number of steps to get to them in the lobby. The staff helped us with our bags on the way out, but they cannot see you on the way in so call out if you need help. 2. Our room had a raised platform tub/shower(more than foot higher than the floor), and extremely difficult to get in safely as there were no handrails, and a half non-moveable shower door that blocked you to some extent. Asked to be moved, which was honored There do seem to be a few rooms with a walk in shower, but most were raised. We did finally find one but we checked maybe 10 rooms to do so. I would not have been able to do this in-season, so if you need a walk in make sure to specify in your reservation. 3. There were steps on a single floor as well. I think the hotel was originally multiple buildings. I believe this is why they had two elevators. Ask for a straight line if needed, and which elevator to use for your room to avoid steps.

The staff was very friendly and the rooms were clean and the bathrooms/ shower area was typical European- small but adequate. The breakfast which was included was very tasty and had many options. The location was very good also. We had been to Avignon on a previous trip so we did not explore the city that much on this trip.

“Great for 4 night visit, explore town and area.”
Easy to find & close to station; only 10 minutes to centre, 15 minutes to the bridge. Lots to do Enjoyed the deco features. Staff helpful, espec Lucas. Several restaurants and cafes close. Use the town shutlle / minibuses to get around too. Took a bue to Pont du Gard and Usez - brilliant

We booked 2 rooms for 4 nights during the last week of November 2024. Although we paid basic room rates, we inquired and were denied any room upgrades (with views of the front street, Jean Jaures and were stuck with some ugly back views. The front desk person said they were pretty full although I checked in the evening and there were only no more than 2 rooms with light on among all their 40 + rooms facing the street during our 4 nights . November is a pretty slow month in Avignon, even during the weekend of the Christmas lighting and you would hope that the hotel would be more accommodating for guests that book 2 rooms for 4 nights. We last stayed at Hotel de L'Horloge right at the center of Avignon and it was very strategically located. The building has historic character and the restaurant, Casa Bronsini was packed every night. Compared to Hotel de L'Horloge, Bristol lobby is always deserted and we seldom saw another guest when we walked through.

So so, although some pluses. I was surprised at so many good reviews. Maybe our room was just not the norm. Although it had been updated, it was still beat up in places. Missing/chipped paint, semi broken toilet seat, worn carpet. There was a bit of an odor in the bathroom but that may come with all the hotels in the old city. Due my planning error, I had to book last minute and so maybe we got a crummy room. It was quite small. The price may have been higher due to the last minute booking as deals I see now are quite a bit less. Ours was a Tuesday night. On the plus side, the staff was friendly and efficient. You can walk to everything easily. The parking garage is quite close. One big negative of being inside is that getting into the walled city can be horrible traffic, and then moving your car to the garage means driving back out of the city and coming in another entrance. I think the convenience once you get there far outweighs this but be prepared. All in all, if I had time I would shop around as for the money if was pretty mediocre. I wouldn’t not stay there if I had to, but I think there are better options.
