“A Very Special 30th Wedding Anniversary”

I guess the title says it all. Where to go to celebrate our 30th Anniversary? Why, Rome of course! Neither of us had been before - although 54 years ago I went on a school trip visiting Venice, Florence, San Marino and Rimini. The Eternal City promised to be a new adventure for us over four days and three nights. But where to stay? Well, we got it very wrong, but so perfectly right at the same time. Let me explain. The Hotel Celio is tucked into a quaint little side street very close to the Colosseum. Location-wise we got that spot on. There are bars, restaurants in abundance and a local shop too. We were greeted very warmly by the owner, Roberto (who speaks fluent English) at the entrance of his amazing boutique hotel. As we entered the foyer we knew we were going to love this place. The baroque style and renaissance artwork was combined with bohemian curios and period effects to transport you into another world in another era. Loving it so far. We are booked into the Penthouse Suite. This is basically two rooms (complete with facilities) and an interconnecting door. One room had the bed set up as a sofa to make a lounge and the other made up as our bedroom. The roof was actually a patio garden! Not only that, but by ascending a winding staircase, there was a further sun terrace with views over the Colosseum. Oh, and there was a mirror terrace on the opposite side. Spoilt for choice. Roberto informed us that we could have our breakfast on the roof terrace overlooking Rome if we wished. We did, and it was perfect. Bottom line is the place is spotless, tastefully quirky, incredibly welcoming and run by a great guy I would like to call my friend. Nay, we both would like to. So, what went wrong? Nothing exactly, it’s just that I am disabled and the hotel does not have an elevator. It has 70 steps from the street to the Penthouse instead. Roberto took one look at me arriving in my wheelchair and was mortified that we had booked in at all. On the hotel web site it is clear that it is not suitable for the disabled, but we did not book direct. We booked through Hotels.com where nothing was mentioned - so beware folks. The thing is, apart from the lack of wheelchair access, this hotel is perfect. I am not complaining. Roberto has a relationship with the nearby restaurants and even offered to serve A La Carte meals in our room to save me the stairs. We didn’t take him up on that. We are going back there, but not until after my back operation. One last thing; I know that some of the other rooms are on the small side, but if you want cleanliness and comfort with a hands-on owner looking after you, then this is the place for you.

“Fantastic hotel!”
The location of hotel Celio is great, close to Colosseum. Although it was very quiet and nice surroundings. The room was comfortable with all the necessary facilities, the WiFi reliable. The breakfast was great, the staff is polite and helpful. It was an amazing experience for me and my family.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Celio with a group on business for a week. The hotel is very charming with an interesting history and rooftop terrace that has a view of the top of the Colosseum! Roberto was extremely helpful and patient with all of our touristy questions. The breakfast is awesome, now that I'm home, I miss the Italian cappuccinos. Located a few blocks from the Colosseum, restaurants galore and a 24/7 convenient store just down the street, it was the perfect location for my first visit to Rome and I will remember it forever! Grazie mille!!

“Can’t wait to go back”
Perfect location for touring Rome, right around the corner from the colosseum. Excellent accommodations for a family (even with big kids) and an amazing breakfast every day! The roof garden is an added bonus, and surprisingly quiet since you are in the middle of the city. We loved our stay!

Let’s start with the good… Two friends traveling together. Requested two beds and they gave us one bed with more floor space which was fine. Rooms and hotel are beautifully appointed with antiques. Service was superb. Extremely friendly staff. Breakfast was exquisite. Old fashion, but stylish. I understand that it is a quaint boutique hotel, but they need to put some money into some upgrades. There was minimal ventilation in the small room, which made it very stuffy very fast. We were able to open up the window, which faced the back mechanic tent that was blowing some sort of machinery all day. But at least we got fresh air. The hair dryer was from 1950 and had duck tape holding it together…. barely blew out any air. The toilets were made for munchkins. You literally had to put 1 foot in the shower and 1 foot out in the room to be able to take care of your private parts. You also had to climb up almost a foot to get into the shower. The shower doors did not open all the way because of how tight the space was. The room is fine if you are under 5’9” and weigh less than 140 pounds. If you are taller or wider, the bathroom will be a struggle. The hotel is good for a 1-3 night stay but definitely not ant long term vacation stay. You will regret feeling claustrophobic after long days of sightseeing.
