We have just returned from a week’s stay at the Concorde Kuala Lumpur hotel and had a lovely time (travel dates were 9th to 16th November 2024). We were meant to visit Kuala Lumpur during Easter 2020 but due to covid the trip was cancelled, so we were over the moon we finally made it here. We hadn’t arranged any prior transfers from the airport so used one of the airport taxis. The journey time was approx. 1 hour and cost RM280 (approx. £50). We arrived just after 16:00 and there was no one else waiting to be checked in. Check in was smooth/quick and the lady on reception gave us a quick low down of breakfast times, what floor the pool and gym is located etc (everyone on the front desk speaks excellent English and are extremely helpful). Please note there was an additional tourist tax applied, and we paid RM60 (approx. £10) for our week’s stay. There were 6 lifts in operation so there was never a long wait to get up or down. We were based on the 8th floor with a view overlooking the car park. The noise was minimal, so we slept very well. The room itself was a decent size, there was plenty of storage, the double bed was comfy along with the pillows, the walls were quite thick so you couldn’t hear what was going on next door. The TV had a few English-speaking channels showing various movies and programmes. The plug sockets were the type we have in England so didn’t need a convertor. An iron, ironing board, hairdryer, safe, slippers (2 pairs), mini fridge, kettle, coffee/tea, cups and glasses were all provided as standard. The air-con worked well and wasn’t noisy. The shower had excellent pressure with the hot water kicking in as soon as you turned it on. Wi-fi worked excellent around the hotel especially round the pool and never dropped out. Housekeeping attended the room daily to empty the bins, change the towels and replenish any toiletries/toilet rolls. Some ‘nice to haves’ in the room would be 1) some hand towels to have been provided. Only 2 body towels and a small towel for exiting the shower were provided. We were using our body towels to dry our hands when it would have been nice to have an additional hand towel. 2) the windows didn’t open so there was no fresh air, we understand that they were locked up for health and safety. It would have been nice for them to open just a little bit to let a bit of fresh air circulate. 3) a washing line (perhaps in the shower area) to allow wet swim wear to be dried. We were using the swimming pool daily so were having to drape our wet swimwear over the rail where the towels were stored in attempt for them to dry. Breakfast - complimentary buffet breakfast was part of the holiday package, and we loved it. It was served daily 06.30am till 10.30am in the dining area just to the right of the hotel entrance. We used to turn out about 7.45am and never struggled to get a table. There is a card featured on the table that has an ‘occupied’ and ‘available’ sign. We always remembered to turn our sign back to ‘available’ once we were finished. We thought the breakfast buffet operated very smoothy considering the number of guests it was catering for. The chefs were constantly making their rounds to ensure everything was replenished. There was something for everyone’s palette. There was a station serving pancakes, French toast, waffles, pastries and muffins, there was 1 toaster which worked very well with a quick turnaround time. There wasn’t anyone waiting in queues or lines as the fried eggs and omelettes were already cooked and stockpiled in one of the warmers. There was a variety of curries, Chapatis/roti, spring rolls, samosas, fried noodles, chicken sausage, chicken nuggets, chicken goujons, hash browns, potato wedges with melted cheese, fried and steamed rice, salads, yogurts and fruit all available. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast, and it set us up for the rest of the day. The breakfast team worked excellent in clearing away any used plates/cutlery and cleaned and replenished the tables ready for the next user. The dining staff we encountered during breakfast were very friendly and worked very hard. Gym – never used the gym but we did have a sneaky peak inside. It’s based-on floor 1 and there is a sign on the front door ‘exclusive for premier guests, operation times 7am till 7pm’. There was a sign on a desk that for non-premier guests the gym could be used but at a daily charge of RM15 (approx. £2.60). The gym was a respectable size and had a large variety of apparatus. The treadmills machines faced the swimming pool. Pool – one of the main reasons for booking this hotel was the commodious pool area. On the photos it looked like there was enough room to pivot and rotate the sunbeds without being squashed next to anyone. This much was true. The pool area is based on floor 1 and is open daily from 7am to 7pm. There were 16 sunbeds in total and 5 tables with 4 chairs surrounding them. The sunbeds in front of the restaurant were rattan and the ones on the other side were a mesh metal effect. Both were very comfortable. We never struggled to get a sunbed no matter what time we ventured up and sometimes had the pool area to ourselves. The pool area is quite a size, tastefully decorated and is immaculately kept. Although we brought our own beach towels, towels are provided on the outside counter underneath the clock. There is a large building facing the pool entrance that blocks the sun for about 3 hours, so the pool is in total shade. From about 8.45am to 9.30am the area to the left of the pool where the tables and chairs are located gets the sun for a bit. Then approx. 12.40pm the sun eventually makes its way past the large building and onto the pool. It only covers the sunbeds that are outside the restaurant, the sunbeds on the opposite side of the pool don’t start getting the sun till after 1.30ish. Once it hits 2pm the sunbeds outside the restaurant enter the shade. Once the sun reaches the other sunbeds you get the sun till about 4.45ish when the sun is then blocked out by edge of the hotel. In essence you get approx. 5 hours’ worth of sunshine for sunbathing round the pool but must move and change sunbed location to do so. The pool attendants were also friendly and were always replenishing the towels and keeping the pool area clean. There is also a decent steam room and sauna that feature in the area to the right of the pool that can be used at no additional charge. Location – the hotel is based in an excellent location. The Petronas towers was approx. 8 min walk and the KL tower approx. 15 mins. We never used public transport but there is a bus stop to the left of the hotel and the monorail station ‘Bukit Nanas’ is approx. 2 min walk to the right of the hotel. There is a 7 eleven to the left of the hotel based in Vortex building, there is also a few ATMs within this building too. For our evening meal and drinks, we utilised the ‘Life Centre’ complex which featured multiple pubs, restaurants and a nightclub. There was also another 7 eleven in the bottom floor of this building. This was only a 5 min walk to the left of the hotel, across the Jalan Ramlee road. The ‘Brewhouse’ became our local and we found it to be the cheapest bar/eatery around that area. This was open 11.30am until 12pm during the week and then 11.30am till 2am on a weekend. They did bucket promotions all day long (no time limit) of 5 bottles of Carlsberg for RM64.80 (£11.46), 5 bottles Somersby cider RM80.80 £14.30), 5 bottle Royal stout RM64.80 £11.46), 3 bottles Hoegaarden RM60.80 (£10.75), 3 bottles Erdinger Dunkel RM98.80 (£17.48), 3 pints (500ml) Carlsberg RM68 (£12), 3 pints Connors stout RM78 (£13.80), 3 pints Kronenberg RM74 (£13), green goddess vodka kiwi cocktail RM20.80 (£3.68), Strawberry Caipirinha RM20.80 (£3.68) and 10 x mug of frozen brew RM128 (£22.60). The food was cheap here too, much cheaper than the Darkhouse, Gravy Baby. Atlantis and Healy Mac’s (for example fish and chips was RM22 (£3.89), garlic bread RM9 (£1.59), Minced pork pizza RM33 (£5.83). Gravy baby (another bar just over the road from the Life Centre if you leave the back entrance where 7 eleven is) became our morning local as this was open from 8am until 2am. We paid RM20 (£3.53) for a Frangelico and Disaronno, happy hour was 8am till 10pm where a pint of Strongbow cider was RM29 (£5.12), glass of Strongbow RM19, Pint of Tiger RM26 (£4.59) a glass of tiger was RM17, Pint Guiness RM29 (£5.12), glass Guinness RM19, Pint Heineken RM28 (£4.95) and glass of Heineken RM18. Glass white wine RM26, house bottle RM130, glass rose wine RM34/bottle RM160. We did eat at Gravy Baby once on the Tuesday as they had a buy any one and get the cheapest free promotion on steak and chicken. Ribeye steak 300G RM230 (£40.67), fillet mignon 250g RM199 (£35), T-bone 350g RM185 (£32), Sirloin 200G RM135 (£24), Lemon herb chicken RM45 (£7.95), BBQ chicken RM45 (£7.95), Peri peri chicken RM45 (£7.95) and chicken kebab RM45 (£7.95). We went for two of the chicken dishes and were not disappointed as two meals all in for £7.95 (£3.97 each). You could choose 2 sides as well which included, truffle fries, mashed potato, onion rings, mushrooms, and steamed veg. For the English who are missing their Sunday dinner, Gravy Baby also did a Sunday dinner (every Sunday) with all the trimmings including Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, veg and gravy. It was RM59 (£10.44) for the roast beef, RM49 (£8.66) for the chicken and RM39 (£6.89) for the veg dinner. Miscellaneous – the hotel provided excellent musical entertainment every night in the lobby bar, and it was good seeing people dancing and enjoying themselves. Showtime was Monday 5.30pm till 12:00am, Tuesday through Saturday 5.30pm until 1:00am and Sunday 08.45pm until 11.30pm. There is a shop on the first floor. As our return flight wasn’t until 19:55pm the hotel let us keep the room on (for an additional charge) until 16:00 which is the time we needed to set off for the airport. The cost to keep the room on was £28.77. Check out was a bit chaotic as there was new arrivals checking in at the same time, so the queue was quite long. With our taxi driver waiting in the lobby, one of the bell boys arranged for us to check out quickly using the premier guest reception area. Getting back to the airport we used one of the taxi drivers who sit in the bus stop just to the left of the hotel, they drive the red and cream cars. We got talking to one of the drivers called Ali as we wanted to visit the Batu Caves and using public transport looked a bit of a faff on. For RM150 he did a decent half day tour including the Batu caves (he waited for us whilst we visited the attractions. HELPFUL tip for any females visiting the temple you need to ensure your shoulders and legs are covered. We read before we went that you could enter the temple without covering these areas but once we arrived there was a female security guard inspecting female guests to ensure they had these areas covered. Unfortunately, we were stopped and weren’t allowed up, we also seen another female denied access as she had hot pants on. As there are several little stores around this attraction, we purchased a long kaftan and paid £6 for it, we also seen the female with the hotpants in the same shop buying some pants. Once this kaftan was in situ, we were then allowed access) and took us to other visitor attractions including Independence square, the palace, the train station etc. We used Ali again to get back to the airport and he charged RM120 (£21) which is so much cheaper than what the airport taxis charged us when we first arrived. Conclusion – overall we had a fantastic holiday and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel ticked every box for us - excellent pool, fantastic breakfast, fabulous location. It had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and memorable. Furthermore, all the staff we encountered including reception, bellboys, breakfast team, pool attendant and our room attendant were friendly, helpful, and hard working. A big thanks to you all. Kuala Lumpur is such a wonderful place, and we are thrilled we managed to finally experience it.
