This is a unique and special spot. When booking, I thought it was on Hanalei Bay, but in fact it is a bit south of and sort of around the coastal corner from Hanalei Bay in a charming little town or area called Wainiha on a smaller bay called Wainiha Bay. This wasn't a problem; it was a delight! From the beach in front of the resort, I could see north to where the western part of the north shore of Hanalei Bay was visible. From the moment I checked in, I felt very welcome. I think the name of the lovely woman who checked me in was Margaret. She was genuinely friendly, gracious, and helpful. And she informed me that I had been upgraded to ocean view accommodations when I had booked garden view. What a welcome surprise! My suite was very nice. Not fancy, but nicely and tastefully decorated with very comfortable furniture and a comfortable bed with nice linens. The bathrooms are rather out of date and in need of an upgrade, but they're clean and functional, and that's really all I needed. I was here to soak up the magic of Kauai and it was in full, beautiful force! The kitchen seemed to be well-equipped with dishes, pots and pans, etc., but I only ate breakfast here; all other meals were out. The ocean/beach-front location cannot be understated. Just magnificent. The beaches are not safe for swimming because of the strong currents and constant, layered waves, but they are spectacularly beautiful, clean, and enchanting. Great for walks, meditating, picnics, naps, sunning, and taking in the beauty of this island. While the exteriors of the buildings from the staircases, balconies, walkways, and exterior doors seem rather "rustic" and in need of repair and upkeep here and there, I didn't mind one bit because his place has a charming classic-Hawaii feel to it, which is a rare find. I'll be back to this magical place the next chance I get!

Just got back from a family Hawaii trip that included three nights on Kauai at the Hanalei Colony Resort. Our room was on the second-floor with a balcony view of the bay and ocean. Magnificent! The room was quiet, clean and and super comfortable with easy beach access. Being mid-November, there was a lot of high wind and rough seas, but not a surprise and we loved being in this beautiful part of the island this time of year. Staff was very friendly and offered some great local information.

We spent 5 wonderful days at the "HCR". This is not the Four Seasons, but that's why we loved it. The Kauai Northshore is quiet and off the beaten path and the town of Hanalei is a treasure. The HCR is a bunch of condos that apparently have some decor variety depending on their actual owners, but they mostly appeared pretty similar. The staff are very helpful. HCR famously has no TVs or AC, but they do have WiFi so you can stream entertainment and stay connected to the world if you want. Windows and fans keep you comfortable without AC. Our room was quite spacious and looked out on the pool area and (indirectly) to the ocean. I think all rooms have patios or balconies. The free resort shuttle bus is great to get to the beaches, parks, or back to Hanalei. If you plan to visit Ke'e Beach/Park be sure to check with the wonderful people at the front desk a month before you arrive to sort out all the park/beach reservation details. None of the other beaches require reservations or entry fees.

On HCR's website it says their cancellation policy is at least 3 days and $50 cancellation fee. In reality, it is at least two weeks and $50 fee. If you cancel in less than two weeks, it is the first night's charge as a cancellation fee. I used Booking.com to avoid the $50 fee. We stayed at HCR Sept 11-15, 2024. The first day there was miserable. After traveling 17 hours from the mainland, we were met with a room that was 95 degrees because the curtains were left open for the sun to bake the room while all the windows were closed. I took two cold showers all the while thinking I paid $700 per night to be miserable. We specifically chose the room right on the beach to get the most of the trade winds (resort has no A/C) but it still took 7 hours for the room to cool off. The manager escorted us to our room so she knew how hot it was but made no effort to make things right. I've received better hospitality at an Econolodge. Later I contacted management to request a refund for the first night. I was told they would not refund it because it was their policy to keep the windows shut so the salt air would not get into the room. They could have at least closed the curtains/shades and turned the ceiling fans on so there was some air circulation. If you use this resort during the summer when the average temperature is 87 F, be prepared for a hot room. The poke at Opakapaka was the best we had on Kauai and the big island. The resort shuttle to places in Hanalei was well worth the $30/day resort fee. It made access to Tunnels beach very easy.
